Mitigating the global impact of misinformation with an AI browser extension, “IBM CertAIn” - Design challenge
The Challenge
The Spark Design Festival Challenge was an internal IBM activity where we were randomly paired with compatible IBMers to form teams to solve problems currently facing the world.
Our team, Team CertAIn, won the Bronze award for our entry, achieving the 3rd highest score out of 24 entries. (See below for video submission)
“How can IBMers leverage the power of AI to develop solutions that effectively mitigate the global impact of misinformation and disinformation, ensuring the content we consume is reliable and trustworthy?”
Our Solution
IBM CertAIn is a web browser extension which uses both heat maps and natural language processing to identify areas of articles on the internet which have verifiable sources and validate the information presented.
My role:
UX Designer on a team of 4 designers and researchers
Participated in design thinking process and discussions with group as we came up with solutions
Contributed feedback during prototype design process
Created storyboards, illustrations and co-wrote script for final presentation
Co-created slides and ran slide deck during presentation
Other team member contributions (because I believe in giving credit where credit is due):
Natalia - research and design thinking
Uma - design thinking, prototypes and wireframes, thumbnail image for entry
Rhea - design thinking, voice narration during presentation video, co-wrote script and co-created slides with me

Project Summary
Requirements:
Two week design challenge (to be done during regular work week as time would allow)
Final submission was to be a 2-minute video with transcription, including a prototype of our solution
Tools & Techniques:
Mural, Figma, PowerPoint, WebEx, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Stock
Each team member contributed to the initial research and the development of the solutions.
Design thinking workshop with team to evaluate options and agree on path forward
Solution:
Browser extension that validates sources of information on the web page and provides a “CertAIN score” to indicate how accurate the article is.
Challenges:
Our schedules did not align with each other enough to meet consistently, so a lot was saved until close to the deadline, which added pressure that might have been avoidable.
None of us were able to attend the extra training sessions that were offered, and this may have helped improve our final presentation.
We had problems with the transcription process, which we resolved with rapid problem-solving within a tight deadline.
Results:
Our solution won the “Bronze” award, with the 3rd highest score of 24 entries.
